What are the curriculum standards and requirements?
PISCES will maintain operation and adequate capacity to facilitate faculty and student access to the live monitoring data, at both the monitoring stack and customer premise equipment.
The academic partner will enforce access-control at the user and network levels using standard tools and techniques. The academic partner further agrees to promote and enforce ethical behavior regarding access to customer data.
The academic partner will advertise the PISCES class in their course catalogue and agrees to follow the outlines for the PISCES curricula. The academic partner agrees to appoint a faculty member to serve as a point of contact for PISCES and the Washington State Academic Cyber Range and to represent the academic institution at occasional meetings.
The academic partner agrees to report to PISCES the frequency and timing of course offerings, the number of students in the classes, and other reasonable metrics for the purpose of capacity scaling.
The academic partner agrees to collect and provide adequate information for provisioning student access to the technology stack and data. The academic partner agrees to anonymize and/or obfuscate representations of the data when making research results public and protect the partner organizations as the source of the data. Both PISCES and the Washington State Academic Cyber Range should be acknowledged in any related publications.
The academic partner agrees that any intellectual property developed by students or professors based on participation with PISCES will remain the property of the participating institution unless developed using federal government funds. In such a case, the intellectual property would be available to the federal government via a royalty-free license.
Do I need certain prerequisites?
Students interested in the course should contact their academic institution to discuss prerequisites. The PISCES program requires students to have a familiarity with basic computer and programming skills as well as access to a computer either personal or through the university, depending on municipality security requirements.
Is there specific hardware or software that I need in order to be involved?
All students must have access to computers and reliable internet. Additional resources are encouraged but not required. All students must meet the requirements of their home institutions, which usually require certain programming platforms. PISCES works with the institutions to ensure that all students have open and available access to required programming platforms or additionally required software.
Is there a way for this class to be taken as part of an online program?
We are exploring opportunities to transition classes to an online format to accommodate those who work from home. The primary requirement will be to have mandated security measures in place including signed waivers by participants, appropriate firewall protections, secure and private working environment, and general personal computer safety knowledge (e.g., ways to protect yourself against hacking, computer viruses, etc.).
How do I get involved?
Students must attend or be registered for the course at one of the universities that currently provides the PISCES program. Students must meet the prerequisites of the program and any additional prerequisites established by the university and/or professor. PISCES is not typically intended for new students; however, exceptions can be made for those who are otherwise qualified.
